Călărași is located in the south-east of Romania, is a river port located on the left bank of the Borcea, in the south of Calarasi county and close to the border area of Bulgaria, with prospects for river and land traffic development to Eastern Europe.
Calarasi is located in the corridor VII of pan-European transport and only 26 kilometers from the fourth Pan-European transport corridor, one of the few places in Romania that has two corridors of European importance. Building highway A2 facilitated the transport of industrial goods to the most important port in Romania and one of the ten largest ports in Central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula, Constanța.
The Călărași river port has berths, storage, anchorage for ships, but has a limited platform area. Navigation on the Borcea branch is done only in certain areas, given the fact that downstream from it there is a clogged area of the river. Regeneration of the port city of Călărași and establishing a passenger river transport lines in the border area, Romania (Călărași ) - Bulgaria (Silistra), will facilitate the development of large river traffic to Central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula. Călărași has an industrial canal, crossed by a modern bridge which links the city to the Chiciu - Ostrov crossing of the Danube.
From 2012, the Călărași railway station is undergoing a comprehensive process of modernization.
