Aachen is one of the most western German cities and is located in the Euregio Maas-Rhine region at the border to the Netherlands and Belgium. The city lies in close vicinity to the fourth biggest German city Cologne. It furthermore forms one of the northern borders of the Eifel low mountain range which is a famous destination for tourists. The city itself hosts many sites of cultural, archaeological and architectural heritage so that it is also a popular place to visit.

Public transport within Aachen is mainly arranged by buses, these also include lines which have their destinations in Belgian or Dutch cities. These lines are operated in cooperation with the Belgian and Dutch transport companies of the respective regions. Again and again, there were plans for establishing a tram line in the city, but the citizens’ decision voted against the latest plan from 2013. In exchange to trams, the city established extra-long buses on some lines. Aachen is member of the Association for Pedestrian and Bicycle-friendly cities, townships and districts in North-Rhine-Westphalia, a municipal network of 68 members whose intention is to promote individual mobility by foot and bike and other means of non-motorized means of transportation.

Since 2012, Aachen is working on a new transport development plan which is a part of the master plan 2030 for urban development. In the first part of the project, a vision for mobility in Aachen in 2050 was developed; the second part is about concretizing a mobility strategy for 2030. The mobility vision contains plans for expanding e-mobile transport, enhancing a better mobility management by connecting the different means of transport more effectively, promote carsharing and –pooling and many others.
