The municipality of Águeda has an area of approximately 335 km2 and 47 729 inhabitants. It is located in the centre of Portugal, in the Baixo Vouga (NUT III) region.
Águeda is known by its citizens large capacity for enterprising, which resulted in the development of a strong business sector, being considered as one of the most industrialized regions of Portugal.
Global challenges in the economy, environment and actual social issues, motivated the local authority to play a more active role in the sustainable development, bringing together companies, IC & T and civil society, encouraging the construction of projects with a strong public participation, integrating environmental principles and the local cultural heritage. Many of these initiatives are considered as examples of good practices at national and even international level.

Status of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

The municipality of Águeda is one of the most active cities/authorities in the area of sustainable urban mobility planning. Águeda was part of the Intermunicipal Mobility and Transport Plan for the Aveiro Region (PIMTRA),which ended in 2014. Águeda is developing a Sustainable Mobility Strategy for the Municipality.

Under the Portugal 2020 framework, Sustainable Mobility Action Plans are being developed for all the Intermunicipal Communities (NUT III). Águeda is integrated in the Aveiro Region Intermunicipal Community Action Plan.
