Maia Municipality is located in the Porto Metropolitan Area, in north region of Portugal, in the Southwest Europe. Maia has 136011 (INE 2017) inhabitants and an important role among his hinterland, because of its centrality and proximity to Porto city.

Maia also has a strong presence of industrial activities, and has located the major transport and logistical infrastructures.

    CIVITAS SUMP-UP is a Learning Program that aims to accelerate the uptake of SUMPs across European Cities. As a Leadership City, Maia is committed to actively engage the SUMP Learning Program classes, to give support to the evaluation, by reporting and giving feedback on the learning activities and documents delivered and also on completing at least two out of the four phases of the SUMP planning cycle over the course of the project.

Status of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

The Municipality of Maia finalized his SUMP/ PMT designated as ‘Sustainable Mobility Plan for the Municipality of Maia’, in 2013 (available here ).

In 2014 a Working Group for Mobility and Accessibility, was put in place aiming to coordinate and implement the interventions outlined in the plan.
Still in the area of mobility, but in specific subject areas, the Municipality of Maia has developed the following plans:  Municipal Plan Accessibility for All - 2010 (available here ) and the Municipal Plan for Road Safety (2011).

Under the Portugal 2020 framework, Sustainable Mobility Action Plans are being developed for all the Intermunicipal Communities (NUT III). Maia is integrated in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Action Plan.
