Barcelos is a Portuguese municipality with around 120 thousand inhabitants, integrated in the NUTS III Cávado region and situated in the of the country
Barcelos’s close location to infrastructure and connectivity axis of great importance, contributes to support an urban territorial system of proximity, called “Quadrilatero”. This system, formed by the cities of Barcelos, Braga, Guimarães and Famalicão, is structured as an urban network for competitiveness and innovation and acts as the main urban concentration of the sub-regions of Cávado and Ave, with about 1 million inhabitants.
Close to major centres, Barcelos asserts itself as one of biggest Portuguese employers in the manufacturing industry. As a textile pole of excellence, this sector integrates almost half of the active population, although the footwear, agriculture, ceramics and tourism have also an important weight.
Barcelos, the owner of one of the most known Portuguese references, the Rooster of Barcelos, is a young, dynamic and vivid city, where innovation is a reality.

Status of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

Barcelos, along with the municipalities of Braga, Guimarães and Famalicão, integrates the Study for Integrated Mobility for the “Quadrilatero”, finished in 2014.
In 2008 the municipality of Barcelos developed a "Sustainable Mobility Plan" under the Sustainable Mobility Project of the Portuguese Environmental Agency. A "Public Transport Restructuring Networks and Services" supported by IMT was also developed in 2010.

Under the Portugal 2020 framework, Sustainable Mobility Action Plans are being developed for all the Intermunicipal Communities (NUT III). Barcelos is integrated in the Cávado Intermunicipal Community Action Plan (2016).
