Budapest is the capital and the largest city in Hungary, situated along the Danube. It is the most important transport node in the country: due to its central position all major highways and railways end within the city limits. The Danube was and is still today an important waterway.

Being the main economic and administrative centre of Hungary, mobility demand is also high, both in terms of trips within the city and commuting from the agglomeration.

The BKK Centre for Budapest Transport, the transportation authority of Budapest, manages one of the largest public transportation systems in Europe, covering the city and some of the suburbs. On an average weekday, 5 million rides are made on BKK lines. Cycling is emerging, and new mobility services usually start their Hungarian operations here.

The Transport Development Strategy (SUMP) of Budapest, Balázs Mór Plan (BMT) has been completed in 2014-2015 including objectives and measures. It sets the main transport development goals of the city on the strategic level until 2030. During 2018 the Budapest Mobility Plan was completed with project appraisal, financing scenarios, an institutional analysis and a monitoring and evaluation plan. The Transport Development Investment Program of BMT is planned to be approved during Q2 of 2019.
