The municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia is located in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, with an area of 170 km2 and 15km of Atlantic coast, occupying the last 25km south bank of the Douro River.

The territorial model of the municipality is very diverse, contrasting the urban concentration of the city and the seafront with urban dispersion in the inland and river front.

Vila Nova de Gaia has in its objectives sustainable development as a priority and therefore the challenge of structuring its territorial model and occupation of urban and rural spaces.

Status of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

The municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia intends to make a Mobility and Transport Plan/ SUMP.
At the moment the mobility strategy for the municipality is defined in the Municipal Land Use Master Plan.
Vila Nova Gaia is working on a project of integrated and sustainable mobility called CityGaia, under the Smart Cities network.

Under the Portugal 2020 framework, Sustainable Urban Mobility Action Plans are being developed for all the Intermunicipal Communities (NUT III). Vila Nova de Gaia is integrated in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Action Plan.
