Montijo is a municipality located in the Southern bank of the Tagus River, in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, that was once known as Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo. With a past linked to the river and agriculture, it has known a great increase in its population in the last years, due the bridge inaugurated in 1998 that brought many young families to the region.

The municipality is constituted by two separated territories: an urban area that includes the city of Montijo, near the river; and a more rural territory with the Canha and Pegões villages.

Public transport services are assured by bus and also by boat that links the city of Montijo to the city of Lisbon.
