Bacău is situated in the region of Moldova, at a distance of about 300 kilometres North of Bucharest. The city has access to the national road DN2 (E85) that links it to Bucharest, as well as to the cities of Suceava and Iași. The European route E574 is an important access road to the region of Transylvania and the city of Brașov. Bacău is located at the intersection of several national roads of secondary importance.

The public transport in the city is provided by a private operator, S.C. Public Transport S.A. Bacău. The company has approx. 70 buses and minibuses with low environmental impact (Euro 3 and Euro 5) and GPRS system. The buses have auto-taxation systems. The transport network includes 10 urban route lines and 4 suburban routes, with a total length of about 140 km.
