Barreiro is a riverside town situated in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, in the south bank of the Tagus River.
With a high industrial development from the beginning of the 20th century, based on the rail lines (and rail yards) that ended in Barreiro, it is now mainly a suburban/ peripheral municipality.
Barreiro has one of highest public transport quota on modal share for pendular journeys in Portugal (especially by boast), with high dependence from Lisbon.

    Includes 5 subprojects: Flexis, Tramo , Acfer , Mobqua and 2-mobility, with several municipalities from the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and Spain. Barreiro integrated the TRAMO project that developed a Methodological and Good Practice Manua to the Elaboration of a Sustainable Mobility Plan.

Status of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

Barreiro is  leading the development of an «Intermunicipal Mobility and Transport Plan for the Area of the TTT (Third Tagus Crossing) – South Bank», that includes the all municipality of Barreiro, and part of Moita, Palmela, Seixal and Sesimbra (2012 - …). This SUMP / PMT is being developed according to the “Guide for Mobility and Transport Plans” (IMT), and is in the final stage.
Under the Portugal 2020 framework, Sustainable Mobility Action Plans are being developed for all the Intermunicipal Communities (NUT III). Barreiro is integrated in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon Intermunicipal Action Plan.
