Brno, the second most populated city in Czech Republic, is the financial, educational and cultural centre of the Moravian region and a national and international destination for other regional centres and capitals (Vienna, Prague, Bratislava). Despite its position, there are hindrances in providing sufficient capacity especially of the railway system (due to decades-long protraction of railway station reconstruction), putting additional pressure onto the road network. The city’s huge travel-to-work area with a significant daily influx of population is also putting constant strain on the urban infrastructure, albeit the public transport system is integrated for the whole South Moravian region and all the transport modes. Despite the popularity that the public transport enjoys, the city is battling high air pollution levels, congestions and high motorisation rates, leading to insufficient parking capacities and quarrels over public space use.
