Zalaegerszeg is a county seat in Western Hungary, among the Zala Hills. Despite its relatively weak – but developing – external transport connections, it serves as the economic and educational centre of the area; it has an agglomeration covering more than a hundred, mostly small settlements. The city itself is composed of an urban centre and several incorporated former villages, serving as commuter neighbourhoods.

Zalaegeszeg was one of the first Hungarian cities to decide on developing the SUMP. In connection with the automotive proving ground under construction next to the city, Zalaegerszeg is planned to be converted to a “smart city” serving as a live test environment to autonomous vehicles and other innovative solutions, together with its broader cross-border region.
