Šempeter-Vrtojba is a border municipality that faces issues involving population ageing and negative migration growth.

There is a free local public transportation, but regional public transportation is less available and too infrequent. Public transportation is not seen as an attractive mode of mobility. Cars are still the most common means of transportation for commuters travelling to work to other municipalities. Even trips short enough to be done by walking or cycling are done by car.
Short distances within the municipality and relatively high population density are ideal for walking and cycling but to make these modes more attractive the network expansion and adaptation of cycling and pedestrian paths is necessary.
