Šmarje pri Jelšah is facing problems with heavy traffic on the roads. The municipality has intensive daily migration activity, where cars are still the most common means of transportation for commuters travelling to work.

Hilly landscape and the dispersed settlement pattern of the municipality are making sustainable modes of transportation less attractive. Public transportation is not frequent enough to be perceived as an attractive alternative to cars. Pedestrian and cycling infrastructure are built but are still not completely connected into a functional network.

However, the progress on expanding pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in the municipality have recently been done and it is expected to be continued.
