Cerkno is facing issues involving depopulation and population ageing. Cars are still the most common means of transportation in the municipality. The dispersed settlement pattern in the municipality hinders walking as mode of mobility.

But in the town of Cerkno distances are short enough for walking to become more common. Cycling is not common as mode of mobility because of the hilly terrain and non-existing cycling infrastructure. Public transportation is not efficient enough to be an attractive mode of mobility. Some big employers organise busses for their employees to travel to work more sustainably.
