Idrija lies in a hilly landscape that hinders accessibility to the town. Cycling in such landscape is difficult and poor infrastructure makes it even more undesirable.

Idrija is accessible only by car since there is no space for the railway.
Despite Idrija being known for former mining industry, there are a lot of jobs that attract people from other municipalities. Cars are the most common means of transportation for commuters. Pedestrian infrastructure is in many parts not suitable for walking. It is often obstructed by cars that occupy a lot of public open space.
