Overall Project Description show_help

SEGMENT was an Intelligent-Energy-Europe-funded project which tested consumer market segmentation techniques to persuade people to adopt more energy efficient forms of transport.

In the framework of SEGMENT, the city of Munich adressed a "life changing moment": when pupils change from primary to secondary school (in Germany that is after the 4th class, around age 10). Munich wanted to get as many pupils as possible to stay on bike when they change to the secondary school, for their schoolway as well as in their leisure time. We want to show them cycling as a modern and sustainable part of mobility culture.
The campaign for the 4th classes combines several elements:
- a parents letter to inform their parents about the growing independence in mobility at this age,
- a bike kitchen at schools, where the pupils learn how to take care about a roadworthy bike. This bike kitchen is combined with several other elements:
- a film made by pupils about cycling and
- a cycling quiz for the pupils and their parents.
In addition, the schools will get a cycling box with game cards with which the teachers can train cycling in every class during physical education. The use of the cycling box will be demonstrated during the bike kitchen, so that pupils and teachers can see what they can do with it. The idea is to promote cycling and road safety in a continuous way at primary schools as a preparation for a increasing independent mobility for young people.

Description of the system effects show_help

The schools show a great interest in this project. The topics we treat in this pilot actions together with the pupils and teachers - checking the bikes of their own and cycling parcours - are from great importance for the pupils at this age. We hope for long-term effects, which means that the teachers start to use the cycling box during physical education without external budgets and support. This project is also the start to search a closer cooperation with the police who is also very active at the schools with the cycling test.

Lessons Learned show_help

Factors of success were:
- the practical parts, encouraging the pupils in their independence
- the multiplier idea of the cycling box, to use it also in other school lessons
- the chosen messages of the parents letter and the bike kitchen: take care, have fun, train yourself, share the fun, do-it-yourself (repairing)
We need now a training unit for the teachers how to use the cycling box and how to integrate it in physical education also with one important question to clearify: Are pupils allowed to come to school by their own bike before passing the official cycling test?
We also see the chance to coordinate and improve the existing teaching material around the topic cycling and safety - also in cooperation with the police who will do also some theoretical parts about road safety.
