Overall Project Description show_help

SEGMENT was an Intelligent-Energy-Europe-funded project which tested consumer market segmentation techniques to persuade people to adopt more energy efficient forms of transport.

In the framework of SEGMENT, Munich addressed a special segment of migrants. When migrants apply for a permanent residents permission they have to participate in an “integration course” to learn German. The idea of this campaign is to develop a comprehensive folder about all aspects of daily mobility in Munich - for the teachers of these courses.
Migrants in Munich have to learn German if they want to get a permanent residents permission. The existing teaching material in the so-called “integration courses” covers a lot of topics of daily life, also about “mobility” . But it doesn't refer to the Munich situation with its transport system, tickets, cycling lanes, etc. So the objective of this project was to develop Munich specific material about all topics of daily mobility. Foreign new residents shall be enabled and encouraged to a sustainable mobility behaviour as an important step to participate in daily and social life in their new town. The material addresses several types of courses and is used by several educational institutions for different levels of language skills.

Description of the system effects show_help

For the conception of the folder a lot of frame conditions had to be taken into account:
The folder should be used for several types of courses with different types of participants (young people, women, mixed courses), different levels of language skills (familiar and unfamiliar with learning situations, illiterates) and used by all educational institutions in Munich.
To find the right messages and preparation of topics the development of this folder was coordinated with a lot of experienced institutions: the Munich Adult Education Centre, the office for intercultural work and publishing houses. Didactic aspects as well as intercultural aspects had to be taken into account. This lead to a very extensive folder with more than 180 pages. Additional partners were also searched to offer additional services to the teachers: an online ordering service for authentic material for the courses and additional offers for projects of the participants (cycling courses, meeting with policemen, …). The project brought together a lot of institutions caring about integration of migrants.

Lessons Learned show_help

The “product” will be tested city-wide in spring 2013 in the integration courses of a lot of institutions in Munich (app. 200 courses). The feedback to the draft folder from practitioners and people working in an intercultural background is already very positive.
We learnt a lot about the intercultural aspects of mobility and how to present the topic of sustainable mobility to people from different countries and cultures.
An evaluation is planned after a few months experience in the lessons.
