Overall Project Description show_help

With the B-riders project, the provincie of Noord-Brabant wanted employees to cycle to work with a pedelec more often. Car commuters that traveled to work with a pedelec three days a week or more, received a financial reward per cycled kilometer.

In order to overcome resistances against cycling, an online cycling coach was developed. This coach was randomly offered to a part of the participants.
Participants with the coaching option could announce how often they intended to cycle next week. Afterwards they received feedback about their behaviour. This was also compared with the cycling behaviour of other participants. Participants who reached a milestone, received a nice spontaneous reaction ("You have cycled to Milan").

Description of the system effects show_help

5,5 billion kilometers cycled (567.010 trips with an average length of 9,7 km).
1050 less car trips per day (of which app. 850 peak trips during rush hours).
Most participants say the want to continue cycling when the reward period has ended.
Participants noticed a car trip reduction of more than 50%. At the control group there was no significant change.

Lessons Learned show_help

Based on the GPS tracking the difference could be measured between participants with and without the online coach. The group that received the online coach option, made 20% more trips on a pedelec than those without this offer.
