In general, the objective of MM is to educate people and society and to trigger and reach a change in awareness towards a more sustainable mobility: "Making aware" includes all activities, which draw people’s attention to the adverse impacts of traffic, to the existence of sustainable modes and their potential to fulfil individual mobility needs.

A strong focus is on social marketing to promote alternatives to car use. "Social marketing" stands for a bundle of methods to develop tailor-made mobility concepts, which raise the chance of success of MM.

Education is a special, very important contribution to the change in awareness. Various educational tools can help different target groups to see the advantages and disadvantages of all types of transport. This applies not only to tools in school. Also the development of family games (like Urban Troll) may be an educational tool, or the organisation of activity days (car free days), that demonstrate how alternatives could look like and that give an impression of the (potential) acceptance in society.
